Asylum and Refugee Assistance
An individual may apply for asylum (if he or she is in the United States) or refugee status (if he or she is outside of the United States) in the United States if he or she was persecuted or has a well-founded fear of persecution in his or her home country for one or more of the following reasons:
- Race
- Religion
- Nationality
- Membership in a particular social group
- Political opinion
Generally, an individual must apply for asylum within one year of his or her entry into the United States; however, exceptions to the one-year filing deadline do exist.
